Welcome to the website of Millbrook Methodist Church, Cornwall. Millbrook Methodist Church forms part of the Plymouth and Devonport Methodist Circuit, in the southwest of England, UK. Situated at the centre of the village, the Methodist Church seeks to maintain and develop Christian witness at the heart of the community.
Millbrook from Maker Heights. Our website includes information about the activities of the church and what it is we believe, and about the history of Methodism in Millbrook. There is also an introduction to the village itself and our local community. Please click on the links on the left to look around the site.
Millbrook is situated on the Rame Peninsula (the south-eastern tip of Cornwall) at the head of a tidal inlet from the Hamoaze. With the River Tamar to the east, the River Lynher to the north and the English Channel to the south, the Peninsula is sometimes referred to as ‘Cornwall’s forgotten corner’. One of the county’s largest villages, it is 16 miles from Liskeard and 15 miles from Looe but a shorter distance of 8 miles from the city of Plymouth by passenger ferry (from Cremyll) and car ferry (from Torpoint).
The church is currently in a period of transition following the appointment of a new minister, Rev. Dr. John Haley, in September 2006. The people of rural communities know how their shops, schools, banks and Post Offices are under threat – many have already gone. Ease of travel by car to larger centres has left some villages without many of the spokes that keep the wheels of community turning. Churches and chapels are no exception to this trend and it is as easy to drive out of a village on Sunday to church, as it is to work or to the supermarket. John believes that there is a place for large Christian churches with hundreds of members that can host special events and provide a full range of resources (“Christian supermarkets”) but he also believes that there is a place for Christian worship, work and witness in local communities “Christian corner shops”.
Whether you visit Millbrook Methodist Church on holiday or you live locally, we hope that you will find a friendly welcome. It is our hope and prayer that the church will enter a period of growth, reflecting the changes in the community that now make Millbrook Cornwall’s largest village. We would be blessed if we could be Cornwall’s largest village church community – we have a way to go yet but we could at least catch the vision.
